What to check before you pick

Most people pick a dictation app on accuracy alone, then find out it doesn't run on their other computer. These six questions narrow the list fast.

Where do you write?

Some apps type into any app with a text cursor, like Voicy, Wispr Flow, Superwhisper and Aqua Voice. Others live inside one product, like Google Docs voice typing.

Which devices do you use?

MacWhisper and VoiceInk are strong, but they stop at the Mac. If you also write on Windows, Linux or Android, check the Platforms rows in the table first. Voicy and Spokenly are the two here that list Linux.

Cloud or offline?

Cloud apps need a connection while you dictate. Superwhisper, VoiceInk, MacWhisper and Spokenly can run local models, though bigger models want a recent Mac or plenty of memory. Voicy has an optional offline mode for dictation on desktop.

Live dictation or recorded audio?

Dictation apps type as you speak. If you also need to transcribe saved audio or video, Voicy, MacWhisper, VoiceInk and Superwhisper do both. Wispr Flow, Aqua Voice, Willow Voice and Typeless don't list file transcription.

How do you want to pay?

Most subscriptions cost $8 to $15 a month. VoiceInk and MacWhisper sell one-time licenses, while Voicy and Superwhisper offer a lifetime option next to monthly and yearly plans. Free plans usually cap your words per week.

Do you handle sensitive information?

Check retention settings and certifications before you dictate client or patient details. Wispr Flow, Willow Voice and Aqua Voice publish business privacy controls on higher plans, and local-first apps keep audio on your device.

Dictation app comparison FAQ

How do I choose between dictation apps?

Start with your devices and where you write. For one app across Mac, Windows, Linux and your phone, try Voicy or Wispr Flow first. For local processing on a Mac, look at Superwhisper, VoiceInk or MacWhisper. Our Best Dictation Software 2026 guide ranks them.

What's the difference between Wispr Flow and Superwhisper?

Wispr Flow is a cloud app built around polished AI cleanup on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, with team controls. Superwhisper processes speech locally by default and lets you build custom AI modes, on Mac, Windows, iPhone and iPad. See Wispr Flow vs Superwhisper.

Which dictation apps work offline?

Superwhisper, VoiceInk, MacWhisper and Spokenly can run local models. Voicy has an optional offline dictation mode on Mac, Windows and Linux, while rewriting and file transcription still need internet. Wispr Flow, Aqua Voice, Willow Voice and Typeless are cloud only.

Are there free dictation apps?

Apple Dictation, Windows voice typing, Google Docs voice typing and Gboard are free. Wispr Flow, Aqua Voice, Willow Voice, Typeless, Superwhisper and MacWhisper have free plans with limits, and Spokenly's local models are free. Voicy has a free trial rather than a free plan.

Which dictation apps work on Linux?

Of the apps we compare, Voicy and Spokenly list Linux support. For Linux-only tools, see Voicy vs Nerd Dictation and Voicy vs Vocalinux.

How do you keep these comparisons accurate?

We check every comparison against the vendor's official website, pricing page and documentation, and date each page. Plans change often, so confirm prices on the vendor's site before you buy. Voicy is our own product, so we hold it to the same sources as every other app.
